Fort Bragg, North Carolina is a United States army post located in North Carolina and is the largest military post in the U.S., with more than 57,000 soldiers. It is a sprawling fortress that was constructed in the middle of a vast expanse of North Carolina countryside to safeguard against possible Indian attacks. The fort at Fort Bragg was built by General Samuel Chase as part of a campaign against Indian incursions into the areas surrounding North Carolina. Over the years Fort Bragg has played an important role in many U.S. conflicts, being instrumental in many victories in wars like the Civil War and World War II. Fort Bragg is one of only three United States army posts located in North Carolina; the other two are Fort Jackson and Fort Lee in South Carolina. The United States Army soldiers who have served at Fort Bragg have become quite skilled at defending their base from possible attack. When the U.S. Military first arrived at Fort Bragg, they quickly learned that the fort would prove to be one of their most difficult battles to fight because of its position on a large peninsula in North Carolina that facing the Atlantic Ocean. Due to the fact that Fort Bragg was built near the ocean it was often attacked from below and to the north, meaning that a large number of enemy troops had to be engaged before the fort could be successfully defended.
